Exploring coloured pasta was a great activity for the babies. They used small muscle movements through gripping, squishing and mixing as they picked out individual pieces of pasta.
Then of course it was all about investigating with the hands. They pulled it apart, examined it, dropped it, flung it, broke pieces off, squished it, licked it and tasted it. The look of concentration and curiosity on their faces really showed how much thinking and wondering was going on as they played and explored this new substance. They stayed absorbed in the experience for an extended period of time, crawling away and then back again to explore some more, repeatedly.
Throughout the activity this was supported by Kate who was using descriptive vocabulary to encourage language such as slimy, slippery and squishy.
